An Albam Gloine

Declan Sheehan

Tagann na pictiúirí de Ghaoth Dobhair a tarraingíodh sa bhliain 1889 agus atá ar taispeántas anseo, tagann siad ó cheann den dá albam grianghraf, arb eol a bheith slán go fóill, agus a cuireadh i láthair i gcás cáiliúil cúirte na bliana sin nuair a cúisíodh an sagart, an tAth. Séamas Mac Pháidín, agus mórán dá chuid paróistigh as an Chigire Ceantair William Martin a mharú i nGaoth Dobhair le linn Cogadh na Talún.

Tá an roghnúchán grianghraf seo glactha ó thogra níos leitheadaí, dar teideal The Glass Album, trína gcuirfear i láthair saothair i rith an tsamhraidh agus an fhómhar, 2013, le healaíontóirí ar a n-áirítear Walead Beshty, Matt Collishaw, Will Curwen, agus Eoghan McTigue, gach duine acu ag tabhairt athfhéachaint ar na grianghraif chartlainne de Ghaoth Dobhair le James Glass sna 1870idí agus 1880idí: i gcomhthéacs a chuid oibre mar ghrianghrafadóir portráide agus tírdhreacha i nDoire go mall sa 9ú céad déag agus go luath sa 20ú haois, agus aimhrialtacht a bhailiúchán iontach de phictiúirí de Ghaoth Dobhair.

I gcuideachta na ngrianghraf sin de Ghaoth Dobhair atá ar taispeántas anseo, tá an dara taispeántas d’ábhar cartlainne ó Albam Glass le feiceáil fosta, ina bhfuil tuilleadh grianghraf de shaol na tuaithe agus na córais feirmeoireachta a bhí i gceantar Ghaoth Dobhair sna 1870idí, le cois grianghraif portráide ón 9ú céad déag ón stiúideo fótagrafach portráide atá suite ar Bhóthar Carlisle i nDoire.

Fuair an togra seo, a bhfuil Pádraig Timoney agus Declan Sheehan i mbun coimeádaíochta air, iasachtaí ó bhailiúcháin phríobháideacha, ina measc iasachtaí ó Ciarán F. MacLochlainn, Ian Bartlett, Orla Fitzpatrick, Kathleen Crilly, agus ó bhailiúcháin Mhúsaeim Náisiúnta Thuaisceart Éireann. Beidh an taispeántas oscailte don phobal ón Samhradh go Fómhar 2013 ins An Gailearai i nGaoth Dobhair, i Músaem Chontae Dhún na nGall i Leitir Ceanainn agus i Múseam an Túir i nDoire. Tá sé mar chuid de thionscnamh dar teideal BT Portrait of a City do Dhoire atá aitheanta mar Chathair Chultúir na Ríochta Aontaithe 2013. The Glass Album

Declan Sheehan

The images of Gweedore in 1889 exhibited here are from one of two known surviving albums of photographs presented in the famous trial that year of the priest Fr. James McFadden and many of his parishioners for the killing in Gweedore of District Inspector William Martin during the Irish Land War.

This selection of photographs is part of a broader project The Glass Album which will across summer and autumn 2013, present works by artists including Walead Beshty, Matt Collishaw, Will Curwen, and Eoghan McTigue, each reflecting upon the archive photographs of Gweedore in the 1870s ands 1880s by James Glass: in the context of his work a nineteenth-century portrait and landscape photographer in Derry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the anomaly of his extraordinary collection of Gweedore images.

Alongside the Gweedore photographs exhibited here, the project exhibits a second ‘Glass Album’ archive which includes further photographs of rural life and farming systems in the Gweedore district in the 1870s, and 19th century portrait photographs from the Carlisle Road photographic portrait studio in Derry.

This project curated by Padraig Timoney and Declan Sheehan, borrows from from private collections including of Ciaran F. MacLochlainn, Ian Bartlett, Orla Fitzpatrick,, Kathleen Crilly, and the collection of National Museums of Northern Ireland,.
