Is é ‘Akin’ an cnuasainm a thugann cúigear ealaíontóir atá lonnaithe i gCo. na Gaillimhe orthu féin: Leonie King, Siobhán Piercy, Dolores Lyne, Jay Murphy agus Margaret Irwin. Le deich mbliana anuas, chuir siad taispeántais ar siúl gach uile bhliain ag Féilte Ealaíon na Gaillimhe agus an Chlocháin agus ag an am chéanna bhí seóanna ar siúl acu go náisiúnta agus go hidirnáisiunta. Saothraíonn gach duine den chúigear seo a mbeatha ina gcuid stiúideonna féin i gContae na Gaillimhe (i mBaile Átha an Rí, in Órán Mór, i Ros Cathail agus in Iarthuaiscirt agus i nDeisceart Chonamara) agus tugann gach duine acu téamaí aonaracha agus téamaí chomhchoitianta chun solais ina gcuid saothar. Trí phéintéireacht, líníocht agus priontáil, tugann siad léargas ar shaol an iarthair, ar sholas agus ar thír, ar tharraingt na hoidhreachta, ar theorainneacha na staire agus ar dhúshláin an taistil.
De thairbhe a n-eispéiris coitianta mar ealaíontóirí phroifisiúnta ar chladach an Iarthair, tá sraith shonraíoch de thaispeántais iontacha curtha le chéile acu. Is comóradh é an taispeántas áirithe seo ar dheich mbliana de shaothar comhoibrithe ar anam an iarthair. Tá camchuairteanna déanta acu leis an taispeántas seo i rith na bliana, 2002, chuig Dún Garbhán, Port Láirge; Ionad Ealaíon Thamhlacht i mBaile Átha Cliath; Sirius, An Cóbh, Corcaigh; Amharclann an Friars' Gate, Cill Mocheallóg, Luimneach; Ionad Ealaíon Naomh Eoin, Lios Tuathail, Ciarraigh; Ionad Ealaíon Signal, Bré, Baile Átha Cliath; Teach an Mhargaí, Ard Mhacha; Ionad Ealaíon an Garter Lane, Port Láirge; Leabharlann Choill an Chollaigh, An Cabhán, agus ar deireadh, chuig ár n-ionad féin - An Gailearí, Dún na nGall.

‘Akin’ is the collective name for five Galway based artists: Leonie King, Sioban Piercy, Dolores Lyne, Jay Murphy and Margaret Irwin. They have exhibited annually for the past ten years at the Galway and Clifden Arts Festivals whilst also showing nationally and internationally. Living and working in their county Galway studios (including Athenry, Oranmore, Roscahill, North West and South Connemara), the five bring individual and collectively felt themes and preoccupations to their work. Through painting, drawing and printing they contemplate western life, light and land, the lure of the past, the limits of history and the challenge of travel.
Their shared experience as professional artists on the Western seaboard has produced a series of stunning group shows. This exhibition, a beautifully accomplished distillation of the western essence, marks ten years of the collective. The show has toured throughout 2002, visiting Dungarvin, Waterford; Tallagh Arts Centre, Dublin; Sirius,Cobh, Cork; Friars Gate Theatre, Kilmallock, Limerick; St. John’s Arts Centre, Listowel, Clare; Signal Arts Centre, Bray, Dublin; Market House, Armagh; Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford; Baillborough Library, Cavan and finally An Gailearí, Donegal completes their national tour.
