Seisear Ban

Seisear Ban

Ima Pico, Cordula Hanson, Deirdre Robb, Marie Pierre Richard, Lisa Gribbon, Celine Sheridan

I dtús báire, tugann an taispeántas grúpa seo, ‘Seisear Ban’, léargas maith ar an réimse ealaíontóirí atá i bhfách lena gcuid saothar a bheith ar taispeáint i gCeardlann na gCroisbhealach. Fuair gach duine den tseisear ealaíontóir seo a gcuid cáilíochtaí le blianta beaga anuas agus tá siad go léir ag déanamh taiscéaladh ar a bpeirspictíocht bhunúsach féin. Taispeánann an léargas beag seo ar shaothar gach ealaíontóir an difear mór atá eatarthu sna cineálacha ealaíon a chleachtann siad.  Ach tá rud amháin coitianta acu uilig, sé sin go bhfuil a gcuid próiseas comhaimseartha agus nuálach ag an am chéanna. Níl saothar ar bith anseo ag umhlú don traidisiún, níl siad rómánsach nó ag cur i gcéill, tá siad cruthaithe ag ealaíontóirí an lae inniu do lucht féachana an lae inniu.

Cordula Hansen – Port Láirge

Tá Cordula sa bhliain dheireanach de chéim BA in Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Phort Láirge. Tá scéimhghné atá éiceolaíoch agus ag an am chéanna spioradálta ag na saothair dealbhóireachta fíneálta páipéir a chruthaíonn sí. Baineann sí úsáid as páipéar athchúrsáilte den chuid is mó agus, nuair is féidir, as ábhair atá éiceabháúil. Cuireann sobhristeacht na bpíosaí nádúr shealadach na beatha in iúl dúinn: próiseas ina bhfuil athrú leanúnach i gcónaí. Léiríonn na foirmeacha follasacha orgánacha seo, trína bpróiseáil agus a bhfoirm, timthriall infinideach na cruthaíochta ó ghiniúint go meath go scoir. Guíonn An Gailearaí gach rath uirthi ina cuid staidéir agus ina slí bheatha mar ealaíontóir san am atá le teacht.

Ima Pico – Béal Feirste

Is de bhunadh na Spáinne í Ima atá anois ina cónaí agus ag saothrú a beatha i mBéal Feirste. Ta sí ina ball den ’International Centre of Women in Photography’. Go bunúsach, baineann Ima úsáid as íomhaí digiteacha agus íomhaí ríomhchuidithe chomh maith le suiteáil agus dealbhóireacht. Tríd an úsáid a bhaineann sí as na meáin digiteacha, thig léi na cáilíochtaí  uigeachta sa tsaothair a láimhsiú sa dóigh go gcuirtear píosaí an-mhealltach in iúl. Tá gach píosa curtha le chéile ó fhoinsí éagsúla a bhfuil, go minic,  siombalachas pearsanta ag baint leo. Taobh thiar de na dromchlaí cáilíochta seo, cuireann rogha agus neas-shuíomh an ealaíontóra  ceisteanna láidre faoi bhráid an lucht féachana.

Celine Ní Shirideáin – An Iarmhí

Bhain Celine céim amach ón Choláiste Ealaíon & Dearadh i Luimneach sa bhliain 2001 agus san am i láthair ta sí ag obair i nGailearaí ‘Origin’ i mBaile Átha Cliath. Trína cuid péintéireachta agus a saothar mheáinmheasctha, fiosraíonn sí an gaol atá idir collaíocht agus an tsochaí. Tá a haird go háirithe ar a bheith ag scrúdú agus ag dúshaothrú  céadfaí diomaite de radharc macasamhail mothúchán teagmhála. Mar sin de, tá spéis Celine dírithe ar shaothar a chruthú a mheallann agus a spreagann an lucht féachana baint de nuair amháin a fheiceann siad é.

Lisa Gribbon – Fife na hAlban

Tá Lisa, a fuair céim ó Ollscoil Dundee sa bhliain 1989, ina cónaí agus ag saothrú a beatha in Fife na hAlban. Le dornán blianta, tá bunús a cuid oibre dírithe ar phriontáil agus i láthair na huaire is ar théamaí 'aitheantais' atá a haird.  Mar fhoinsí inspreagtha dá cuid oibre, baineann sí úsáid as acraí shimplí  choitianta a athléiríonn sí mar shiomail nó mar mheafair a chuireann in iúl coincheapanna téamacha. Is fearr le Lisa réimse teoranta de mharbhdhathanna  a bhrúann chun tosaigh foirm láidir an tsaothair. Fuair sí a hinspreagadh do na saothair priontáilte ‘Fuinneog’ agus ‘Marked Forms’ ó sheanbhallóg i gCorrán Binne.

Deirdre Robb – Béal Feirste

Bhain Deirdre a bunchéim amach ó Ollscoil Uladh sa bhliain 1999 agus chríochnaigh sí céim M.A. sa bhliain 2001. Tá a haird dírithe go mormhór ar shuiteáil dealbhóireachta, a úsáideann teicstílí, solas, grianghrafadóireacht, priontáil agus dealbhóireacht. Tá bunús a cuid saothar bunaithe ar thimpeallachtaí agus ar na gnéithe atmaisféaracha agus cultúrtha de shuíomh ar leith. Tá taithí leitheadach ag Deidre a bheith ag obair i gcomhthéacs pobail chomh maith le bheith ag curáideacht agus ag eagrú taispeántais. Tá sí ina Cathaoirleach ar ‘Creative Exchange’, ina Stiúrthóir agus ina Leaschathaoirleach ar an  ‘N.I.Visual Arts Forum’ agus ina Stiúrthóir ar an  ‘Engine Room Gallery’ - iad sin go léir lonnaithe i mBéal Feirste. Téann an úsáid a bhaineann Deirdre as solas, dath agus uigeacht ina cuid boscaí solais i bhfeidhm ar an lucht féachana ar leibhéal céadfaíoch; ag frithghníomhú do theas & fuacht, do láithreacht & easpa, do mhothúcháin teagmhála, fios agus cuimhne.

Marie Pierre Richard -  Baile Átha Cliath

Is de bhunadh na Fraince an t-ealaíontóir lionsa, Marie Pierre, atá anois ina cónaí agus ag obair i mBaile Átha Cliath, áit ar bhain sí céim amach i Staidéir Scannán ó UCD sa bhliain 2002. Bhí sí ina stiúrthóir ar fhéile agus ar chlár an  Dublin French Film Festival ó 1997-99. Ó 1998 ar aghaidh, tá Marie Pierre ag reáchtáil, i gcomhar le páirtnéir, stiúideo fótagrafaíochta agus tá roinnt tionscadail fótagrafaíochta curtha i gcrích aici chomh maith le leabhair féinfhoilsithe agus saothair taispeántais. Socraíonn sí a cuid grianghraif i dtacair nó i sraitheanna ina maítear ceangal scéaltach agus radharcach. Cuireann a saothar inár láthair brí den rud neamhréitithe, den rud samhalta atá ann ach atá folaithe ón domhan seo díreach mar a bhíonn dialann pearsanta. Fanann na píosaí saothair seo cineál ar foluain agus débhríoch, ag cur i gcuimhne dúinn gur iomaí míle dóigh inar féidir brí a bhaint as an domhan seo.

Six Women

Ima Pico, Cordula Hanson, Deirdre Robb, Marie Pierre Richard, Lisa Gribbon, Celine Sheridan

‘Séisear Ban’ group exhibition in the first instance allows Ceardlann na gCroisbhealach to present an example of the range of artists applying to exhibit their work. These six artists are all relatively recent graduates and all are engaged exploring their own original perspective. This small representation of each artists work shows their widely differing practices. What unites these artists is that their processes are both contemporary and innovative. None of the works kneel at the altar of tradition, they are neither romantic nor frilly, they are made by artists of today for today’s audience.

Cordula Hansen – Waterford

Cordula is a final year BA student in Waterford Inst. Of Tech. The delicate paper sculptures have both an ecological and spiritual dimension. She mainly uses recycled paper and where possible eco-friendly materials. The fragility of the works is suggestive of the temporary nature of life: a process of continuing change. These, clearly organic forms, both in their processing and form, confer the infinite cycle of creation – decay – dissolve. An Gailearaí wishes her every success with her studies and future artistic career.

Ima Pico

Originally from Spain, Ima now lives and works in Belfast. She is a member of the’International Centre of Women in Photography’. Ima works mainly in digital image and computer generated images as well as installation and sculpture. Using digital medium she can manipulate the textural qualities in the works to present highly seductive pieces. Each piece is composed from several sources which often have a personal symbolism. Beneath these quality surfaces the artists selection and juxtaposing sets up a strong underlying questioning for the viewer.

Celine Sheridan

Celine graduated from Limerick School of Art & Design in 2001 and is currently working in the ‘Origin’ Gallery, Dublin. She explores the relationship between sexuality and society through her painting and mixed media work. She is particularly concerned in examining and exploiting senses other than the visual such as the tactile sense. Celine’s interest therefore is to create work that results in the viewer being tempted to touch it by using their visual sense.

Lisa Gribbon

Lisa lives and works in Fife, Scotland and graduated from Dundee in 1989. For the last number of years her work has primarily been in print and her current practice is concerned with themes of ‘identity’. Sources for her works are simple, functional everyday objects which are then re-presented to become symbols or metaphors conveying thematic concepts. Lisa prefers a limited range of muted colours which pushes the strong sense of form in the work to the fore. The printed works ‘Window’ and ‘Marked Forms’ are inspired by a ruined dwelling on Horn Head.

Deirdre Robb

Deirdre graduated from the University of Ulster in 1999 and completed her M.A. in 2001. Her main area of practice is sculptural installations using textiles, light, photography, print and sculpture. Her works are largely based on environments and centred on atmospheric and cultural aspects of a specific site. Deirdre has worked extensively in a community context as well as curating and organising exhibitions. She is Chairperson of ‘Creative Exchange’, Director and Deputy Chairperson on the ‘N.I.Visual Arts Forum’ and a Director of the ‘Engine Room Gallery’, all located in Belfast. The use of light, colour and texture in Deirdre’s light boxes engage the viewer on a sensory level; reacting to hot & cold, presence & absence, touch sensations, consciousness & memory.

Marie Pierre Richard

Originally from France, lense based artist Marie Pierre now lives and works in Dublin where she graduated in 2002 from UCD in Film Studies. She was festival and programme director of the Dublin French Film Festival from 1997-99. Since 1998 Marie Pierre has co-run a photographic studio and produced a number of photographic projects, self-published books and works for exhibitions. Her photographs are arranged in suites or series and have an implied narrative and visual association. Her work presents a sense of the unresolved, the unreal, which exists yet is hidden from the immediate world and similar to a personal diary. These works remain somehow suspended and ambiguous reminding us as to the infinite ways of interpreting our world.
